1. iRobot s8

This smart robot mop and vacuum is an excellent choice for many households. It has a great navigation system that includes GPS and laser sensors. It can switch between mopping and vacuuming with the press of one button. It automatically empties the dust bin above its charging station, in contrast to other self emptying robots which require you to empty the bin after each run.

It's got a range of other features that make it an excellent choice for homes of all sizes with its intelligent obstacle avoidance that utilizes the camera as well as processor-powered smarts to see obstacles. It's rarely tripped up or stuck during a cleaning process. In my tests, it was the best at avoiding objects like power cables. It is not as accurate in detecting pet waste, or other dangers.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

While Anker-owned Eufy has made a name for itself in low-cost robot vacuums it hasn't previously offered an all-in-one model that could also mop. The X8 Hybrid is a new model that offers a range of advanced features, and can compete with more expensive models.

Eufy's main selling point with the X8 is its laser navigation. The X8 makes use of the laser mapping system, which is more accurate than previous Eufy devices. It takes less time to create a comprehensive map of your home. It can also store multiple maps. This is great for multi-floored homes.

The X8 is still a good vacuum on bare floors that can carry debris under its side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin with ease. The X8's tyres, despite their circular shape, are very efficient at grabbing corners and edges. It's not a fantastic cat litter eater, however as our tests show it only removes about 90 percent of the fur from hard floors.

The mopping mode that is the basic one uses the same reservoir of water as the vacuuming mode. This is great for spills that aren't too dangerous, but you are unable to control the amount of water it consumes. It does, however, do an admirable job of picking up pet hair, with a higher pickup rate than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

The company is known for its quiet home appliances, Miele's RX2 robot vacuum comes with outstanding cleaning power, gorgeous design and excellent navigation. But it has some operational issues which prevent it from being considered as the top overall smart robot vacuum.

The RX2 is equipped with a dual-sensor mapping system which uses LIDAR to map an area, and a pair 3D scanning cameras for detecting and staying clear of obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). After the room has been mapped and assigned, you can designate virtual no-go areas and sections that you would like to be the robot. You can also initiate an automatic clean or manually change the cleaning mode, watch live feeds from the onboard cameras, and more from the main screen.

The RX2 has superior sensors that detect furniture and other obstructions in a flash. And its sweeping and suction power are top of the line cleaning up surface debris from medium-pile carpeting and embedded dust in bare floors. It's not the most powerful robot on the market. As with many others it's not a very good climber and is prone to problems with things like thresholds made of steel transition strips.

Some people buy robot vacuums because of the ease of setting up a schedule in an app, and then forgetting about them for weeks. However, it's essential that a machine can do the job, which is the reason our ZDNet staff tested and reviewed several of the most popular models to help you select the best one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This round, budget robot is just like a typical robot, but it's an upgrade in terms of performance and features. Its intelligent mapping system creates 3D and 2-D maps of your home and makes use of to navigate and avoid obstructions. It's even able to spot common obstacles like power cords and furniture legs in real time. The rear dust bin is easy to access for emptying and removing the filter equally easy.

5. Eufy 11S

If you're looking to buy a basic robotic vacuum that is simple and has no frills at a low cost, the Eufy11S is a great option. It isn't equipped with some of the more advanced features, like digital mapping and Alexa integration, which are found in more expensive models, however, if you don't require these features, you can save a little money with this model.

This robot is simple to set up and use. It doesn't require a smartphone app or Wi-Fi pairing, but it does come with an remote control that lets you choose between different modes and alter the suction level. It also lets you manually send the robovac off on a scheduled cleaning.

In our tests during our tests, the 11S was extremely efficient in cleaning dirt and pet hair from hard floors as well as in low-pile carpets.
