The main selling point of Eufy's this machine is its laser navigation. The X8 is still a good vacuum on bare floors that can carry debris under its side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin with relative ease. The X8's tyres, despite having a circular shape, are very adept at grabbing edges and corners. It's not the best cat litter picker, though as our tests show it is able to remove around 90 percent of the fur off hard floors.

The basic mopping mode utilizes the same reservoir of water as the vacuuming mode. This is ideal for spills that aren't too dangerous, but you are unable to control the amount of water that it uses. It does, however, do an admirable job of picking up pet hair, with a better speed of pickup than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

The company is known for its quiet home appliances Miele's RX2 robot vacuum comes with outstanding cleaning power, beautiful design and great navigation. But it has a few operational oddities that prevent it from being ranked as the top overall smart robot vacuum.

The RX2 comes with a dual-sensor mapping technique that uses a LIDAR to map the space and a pair of 3D scanning cameras for detecting and eliminating obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). Once mapped, the app lets you assign virtual no-go areas and preferred areas that the robot will automatically clean. You can also alter the cleaning modes, start a manual clean, or view a live feed of the cameras onboard from the main screen.

The RX2 has superior sensors that can detect furniture and other obstructions instantly. And its sweeping and suction power are top of the line, picking up surface litter from medium-pile carpeting and embedded dust in bare floors. It's not the fastest robot available. It's not the greatest climber and has issues with metal threshold transition strips.

Some people buy robot vacuums because of the ease of setting up a schedule using an app, and then forgetting about them for weeks. It's crucial for a robot to be capable of the task and that's why our ZDNet staff has compared and looked over some of the most popular models in order to help you select the right one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This budget robot is just like your typical robot but it's an upgrade in performance and features. Its intelligent mapping system creates 3D and 2D maps of your home, and uses them to avoid obstacles and navigate. It is able to detect common obstacles like furniture legs and power cords in real-time. This combination of sensors, together with a bump sensor and an infrared sensor for dropping that keeps it from falling down steps, makes it one of the most flexible vacs we've tested.

In our tests, it easily climbed over thick shag rug and didn't get stuck on them (like the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690). Its navigation abilities were impressive as well; its composite score in carpet and bare floors beat out the competition and it was able to pick up 98.5 percent of the surface pet hair and litter from our lab test samples.

The controls are simpler than the competition's. There is a cleaning button at the top, and you can either start it using the app or by voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also schedule weekly or daily cleanings, designate no-go zones, and look up its cleaning history. Covered in stylish dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and looks attractive in your home. Its rear dustbin is easily accessible for emptying, and taking out the filters is also easy.

5. Eufy 11S

Eufy 11S is a good option for those looking for a robot vacuum that's simple and doesn't have any frills at a low cost. The model isn't equipped with smart features such as Alexa integration and digital mapping found in more expensive models. However, if you don't need these features, you could save money.

This robot is simple to set up and use. It does not require smartphone application or Wi-Fi pairing. However it does come with a remote control which allows you to choose between different modes and adjust suction level. It also allows you to manually take the robovac off for scheduled cleaning.

In our tests, the 11S was extremely effective in removing dirt and pet hair from hard floors and in low-pile carpets. Its slim profile made it possible to get under low-hanging furniture and other objects that heavier robots were unable to get at. It was also able to get over thresholds for doors and transition between floors and another.

The 11S, just like other robots, will also eat some objects, such as cords and cat toys. The manufacturer says that you can stop this by keeping these objects off the floor and using a cord organizer if possible. It also suggests that you clean the dustbin, replace the filters and clean or change the brushes when required.

Roomba 990 by iRobot

The Roomba is iRobot's flagship neato robot vacuum (click through the next article) vacuum. It's costly but it's top-performing and arguably the most advanced robot vacuum available. Its self-navigating capabilities and environmental mapping are truly a marvel to behold. It also has more advanced automation features than most competitors, including the ability to set virtual boundary markers using its mobile app. It's a capable robot vacuum, even if the app is a bit sluggish and the 980 spins out when it is pushed over cables.

One thing we love about the 980 is that it makes use of its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and visual simultaneous localisation and mapping technology (or vSLAM) to remember the floor plan of your home. It uses this information to create a consistent, efficient cleaning path in every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a more efficient robot vacuum cleaner than the majority of high-end robots.

The 980's other features include two multi-surface rubber brushes which pick up dirt from carpets and hard floors, along with the spinning brush that sweeps debris into the robotic vacuum's bin. The floor tracking sensor helps it navigate around furniture, along edges and up the stairs. Cliff Detect prevents the Roomba from falling. And it automatically returns to its base station for hassle-free charging between sessions. The bin capacity and battery life of the 980 aren't as great as some other robot vacuums. However, it's an extremely reliable and sturdy machine that can keep floors clean for many hours.
