What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are an excellent way to repair your gear until you reach the trailhead for a professional repair. The challenge is knowing what to do with it when you require it.

Tools

It is important to be equipped with the right tools on hand when you are out in the field. This kit was designed with this in mind, and includes all the hand tools essential to repair equipment in the field. The tools are made of metal and feature the smallest amount of plastic, so they can be used in a variety of ways. The kit comes with a zippered canvas pouch for the coalcracker tools, a reamer, twist awls, cutting shears and Gimlets (5MM). It also comes with a bottle of coalcracker oil with illustrated instructions, a wooden spool, an reamer, and a twist awl.

Repair Patches

If you've a hole or two in your gear, you might want to consider adding some adhesive patches to your rep kit. These heavy-duty patches come with a high-performance adhesive pre-applied to a durable polyurethane backing that allows a tear to recover under pressure. Available in clear or color options they offer a long-lasting protection against punctures, moisture sunlight, saltwater and extreme temperatures.

If your kit doesn't contain any of the above items, you might want to consider including a bag of waterproof Aquaseal wader repair sealant. This water-tight adhesive will stick to fabrics, plastics, metals and more for permanent repair. It's ideal for repairs to drysuits and is able to be applied out in the field. Allow the sealant up to 12 hours for it to cure before using your repaired equipment.

The essential field fabric avon starter kit for tents, packs and rainwear made from silicone-impregnated nylon. This kit includes one Clean Tape patch and a sil-nylon repair sample as well as a 1/4 ounce tube of Goretex Silfix repair adhesive and sealant, as well as a brush. Apply patch over a smooth, clean surface of the damaged area with a minimum of 1/2 inch overlap. Remove release paper and rub adhesive side down using a gentle pressure.

Clean up the area that has been punctured, then apply the tube-scuffer, or sandpaper to roughen the surface which assists in making glue stick. Spread a thin layer over the patch. Cover an area which is at the very least large as the patch. Wait a few minutes for the glue to become tacky before pressing the patch down and holding it securely in the position.
