SmartThings was a founding member in the Home Connectivity Alliance. This alliance is working on making major home appliances made by different manufacturers interoperable. In the near future you can control your Samsung washer/dryer, Electrolux oven, and LG TV through the same application.

While it's not as well used as Alexa and Google Assistant, SmartThings does have a few big hitters on its roster that include Arlo, Nest, Belkin and Lifx. It's also compatible with Matter, a protocol that allows accessories to be paired regardless of brand. For most users, however, merged Alexa and Google Assistant voice controls is probably the best bet.

Family Hub

This refrigerator freezer is the most modern one you can find. It features a 21-inch touchscreen integrated into the door, and comes with a variety of clever features. You can access entertainment apps, write notes for family members (think a huge digital version of a notepad stuck to the fridge) and check for weather updates, and much more, all thanks to Samsung's own voice activation assistant, Bixby.

The touchscreen also lets you to manage your food and recipes, allowing you to add ingredients directly from the recipe app and also see what's in the fridge with internal cameras. You can also make shopping lists on the go and keep track of foods to see when they'll expire. You can even use an app for recipes that will provide instructions while you cook.

This is the second generation of Family Hub fridges and Samsung claims that it's spent the past year perfecting them based on customer feedback. One of the major changes is that you can now create different profiles for each household member so they can tailor the apps and information they can access. It's not as good as Alexa integration into your fridge but it is an improvement over last year's model.

Family Hub is not only an app for managing your groceries and entertainment It also manages Samsung's SmartThings platform. It can onboard Matter-compatible devices, such as lights and plugs and allow you to use the touchscreen to control them as well.

Samsung's fridge has been in use for a while and, while it still provides a decent amount of features, the touchscreens aren't an essential feature for the majority of people. These are more of a fun, semi-frivolous accessory than anything else.

It could change when more software updates are released, but for now these models are ideally suited to those who want the most complete connected fridge that is possible. If you're not among them, you can choose a lower-cost model without the Family Hub to save some cash. That might still be worth it for you when you have a number of smart home devices that must be controlled via the same screen or if you just like the idea of a fridge with a giant touchscreen.
