AMBIEN use late in third trimester may cause respiratory depression. The patients should not drink alcohol or making use of illicit or prescription drugs and street drugs prior to or following AMBIEN treatment.

Dosage

AMBIEN is known to cause impaired psychomotor function on the day following. It is not recommended to be used with alcohol or any other medication which can increase the metabolism of zolpidem. There have been falls in older patients who take 10-mg doses zolpidem tartrate. Remind patients to walk up slowly from bed and not to operate machinery or drive while taking AMBIEN.

Instruct pregnant women to avoid breastfeeding and that AMBIEN may enter breast milk. Examine infants for signs of excessive sedation, hypotonia, insomnia, and respiratory depression.

AMBIEN could trigger hepatic-related encephalopathy in those with severe hepatic impairment. When zolpidem is administered in conjunction with other drugs that affect GABA receptors, for example anticholinergics or benzodiazepines can raise the likelihood of developing the reaction (see DRUG INTERACTIONS]. AMBIEN may cause tolerance and dependence. Stop treatment as soon as medically appropriate.

The Side Effects

Most commonly, the side effects of AMBIEN are headaches, dizziness, sleepiness and stomach pain. The adverse effects of AMBIEN are mild, and usually will disappear within two days.

If you're taking AMBIEN, and you plan to drive, or take part in any other activities that require the ability to be alert, you should take your time. This is especially true in the event that you took the medication at night after sleeping (7-8 hours), with alcohol, or in conjunction with other medications that can affect your CNS.
