Three Wheeled Buggies

Three-wheeled buggies are ideal for walking around the neighborhood or for jogging. Their compact 3 wheel stroller design makes them easy to maneuver even in tight places.

For an easy ride, opt for a pram fitted with air-filled tyres. Also, look for models with a 360deg front swivel wheel. However, they are susceptible to punctures so be prepared with a repair kit.

Frame made of sturdy material

Recent figures have been released showing that the three-wheeled buggy - that noughties symbol of more money than wisdom is on the verge of disappearing. Four-wheelers have replaced them, which are more versatile and easy to drive, while also looking stylish.

The bigger the wheels are, the better your buggy can deal with bumpy surfaces and uneven pavements. The larger wheels, both front and rear allow you to move and more stable when walking downhill or in difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn as well as a 3 year old and found that it was able to withstand grass, cobbles rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said it felt sturdy to push, and very solid on difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable, so require occasional pumping) come with suspension built-in which was extremely comfortable for my children.

Another thing to think about is the seat size and shape. It should be big enough for your child's comfort and you will also want it to be able to recline to allow them to lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat, which lets your child face you, while others only allow a parent-facing one.

The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road or walking in muddy areas. The buggy can be used as a one-person unit from birth and then adapts to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for toddlers and infants from birth to age 4, and comes with a bumper and raincover, a new 5-point harness, and a big cushioned seat. The storage options are excellent too, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets inside the hood, and an easy-to-access pouch on the rear of the seat unit.

Wheels with larger diameter

Larger wheels means that your buggy will have more stability on uneven terrain, which is ideal for buggies designed for off-road use. They also make it easier to maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have rotating front wheels that help you navigate around tight corners, whereas others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to improve the speed and stability with the speed at which they can be pushed. This is particularly useful when you crash into the kerb or a tree. The front wheel will lift slightly to prevent hitting it.

A majority of 3 wheel pushchairs come with air-filled tyres. This means they are able to handle different terrains and are more flexible than four wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. However, they're prone to punctures and you'll need to have a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump handy.

They also have a suspension system which, in her words "smoothes out bumps extremely effectively".

Buggies with larger wheels can be quite wide and can be difficult to fit in tight spaces. This is an issue especially if you're using it to an exercise bike or to be able to get through narrow doorways when out and about. Fortunately, the majority of models come with small folding options that allow you to take off the front wheels to make compact storage.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the major advantages to a three wheel buggy is that it's much easier to maneuver particularly with a child in the back. The way they are constructed means that the front wheels turn on a dime and are incredibly easy to maneuver and are ideal for tricky terrain such as parks, cobbles and bumpy pavements as well as dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3-wheeler with her toddler, and she wrote: "The Terrain is a pleasure to drive on rough terrain. The swivel wheel in the front was especially useful." I was also impressed with the way it handled kerbs with the hand-operated break. It was extremely stable when going downhill or on a rough terrain."

The only downside of this great maneuverability is that the best lightweight 3 wheel stroller wheel buggy's larger wheels sometimes mean that it can struggle in tight spaces, something to be aware of when you live in a metropolitan area. If this is an issue, a 4-wheeled buggy may be a better option for you.
